Why should I work with a recruiter?

In a word...access.  Typically, recruiters are used to locate highly specialized and experienced candidates, or to quietly conduct a search without publicly advertising the position.  We look for people who have the precise skills and attributes our client companies need. We are not in business to help candidates find a job. Rather, clients engage us to find candidates to fill specific positions.

Good, reputable recruiters (yes, you may call us headhunters just don't sneer when you do), provide exceptional access to the decision makers.  Perhaps of equal or greater importance, there is often a favorable bias given to candidates presented by a recruiter on the basis of trust and rapport established through previous search projects.

How else do candidates benefit from working with a recruiter?

  • We can help to ensure that you are compensated fairly based on the prevailing market conditions.

  • We offer exposure to those opportunities, many of which are never advertised, which match YOUR requirements.

  • Our Industry Knowledge offers invaluable insight you can't get on your own.

  • We work to ensure there is a right fit;  that he needs of the client are in sync with your career plan.

  • You gain competitive advantage over other applicants at no cost to you.

A good recruiter seeks to understand who the real person is behind the degrees and impressive achievements.  Is this a balanced individual whose decision to make a change is for reasons that transcend money alone?  Will this person be a major contributor in five or ten years?  What are some of the motivators for this person?  Where, how and why has this person been successful?  These are just some of the aspects a recruiter seeks to understand and convey to a client.

A good recruiter also operates within the guidelines of certain ethical commitments.  We invite you to read our Professional Commitment to Candidates.

What will MyEducationJobs do for me?

Our talent lies in knowing when and where our clients' needs and the next best career move for you are in sync. We always remember the value of you as a candidate. Without clients AND candidates, we wouldn't have a business.

We provide you direct, confidential access to the decision makers on the assignments we are handling.  We help put you in the best position possible for you to highlight your strengths among the candidates under consideration.

We strategize with you prior to each interview.  We also debrief thoroughly after the interview to determine your level of continued interest and suitability for the given opportunity.

Can you get me a job? We don't help people "get jobs" because we are client-driven; we find the right people for positions that we are asked to fill. We work first and foremost for clients.

Can you find me a job? Yes, though only when our clients' requirements and your interests and abilities match.  Then we'll work closely with you to pursue the opportunity. Once in front of the client however, the rest is up to you.

Can you give me a list of jobs? We don't operate that way. We match people and opportunities very carefully - that's our expertise...and why our clients engage our services. You can see some of the projects we we're working on by looking at our Current Assignments page

How much will you charge me? Nothing. Ever. Companies pay us for our services, not candidates.

Who is looking for people like me? That is highly dependent on what kind of person you are, what skills you have, and how appealing your CV is.

How should I prepare my CV? In depth and in detail.  Provide examples of your duties and problems you solve.  Also make sure it is interesting and in an easy-to-read format.  Remember many companies, including us, scan CV's into a database.

What do you do with my CV? It is thoroughly reviewed by a Search Consultant in preparation of the dialogue to review your career plan. We use it as the foundation for developing your Confidential Candidate Profile.  Once you have talked with a Search Consultant to discuss your needs, wants and expectations, it is then scanned into our database to facilitate updates and distribution to appropriate clients.  Remember we only forward your profile once we have determined mutual interest and obtained your permission.

When will I hear from you? We will contact you within two business days of receipt of your information. On a go-forward basis we discretely contact you as soon as we have a opportunities that may be of interest to you and match the career plan you discussed with us.

What else can I expect? We listen carefully to your career needs and treat you with the care and consideration to which you are entitled.  While our primary focus is completing our client's projects, we consider it imperative to work with you in developing and managing your career plan.

Who pays MyEducationJobs's fee?

Our fees are always paid by our clients...meaning the organizations we represent.  We never ask a candidate to pay us for our services.

Our opinion is that you run, not walk, away from any recruiter that asks you to pay any portion of their fee or expenses.

What are some tips on working with recruiters?

We make these recommendations ideally to enhance the rapport between you and MyEducationJobs.  And, believe it or not, we do encourage you to establish a relationship with more than one, though not more than three, qualified recruiters who specialize in your area of expertise.  Why? Again, it relates to access.  No matter how good a recruiter is, they do not have unrestricted access to every decision maker in your field.

The first, best bit of insight is to establish a relationship with a recruiter before you need their assistance in finding a new opportunity.  Remember, we don't help people find jobs, we fulfill the needs of our clients.

Ask direct questions to determine if working with that recruiter is in your best interests.  Ask about tenure, area of expertise,  overall reputation (ask your peers if they have heard of them) and client relationship (i.e. contingency or retainer, exclusive assignment or not, search specialties, professional affiliations, etc.).

Be open and honest: about job experience, education, income, etc.  A good recruiter respects the confidential nature of these discussions and does need this information to best assist you in leveraging your career.

Tell the recruiter as soon as possible if you decide that you are not genuinely interested in the opportunity.  And try to tell them why it is not a good fit for you.

Always try to be a reliable resource when you elect not to be a candidate for an opportunity.

Have an updated CV.  Send a current copy to your trusted recruiter each time it changes.

Keep scheduled appointments, return calls (e-mails too), and be as cooperative as possible.  Your recruiter will be as reliable as you are.

Provide references the recruiter can contact immediately that will not jeopardize your current employment: it proves you have nothing to hide and may enhance your candidacy.

Do not go on interviews and solicit an offer in order to gain advancement at your current employer.  Not only does this alienate the recruiter (and everyone they know), it also usually backfires in that your loyalty to your current employer has become suspect.

If you are not hired for a particular opportunity, try not to take it too personally.  By way of example, on a typical search campaign a good recruiter will contact about 200 prospects in doing the initial research, from that pool of candidates perhaps 50 will make the preliminary list, about five will make the "short list", and only one will get the job.
